香衣 [xiang yi]—Xiangyi – [Clothing (衣服 [yi fu])] A colored robe (色衣 [se yi]) permitted by imperial sanction (勅許 [chi xu]). Originally, it was dyed with fragrant wood (香木 [xiang mu]), hence the name. Later, it transformed into various colors. However, those used by Tendai Esoteric Buddhism (台密 [tai mi]) and others are reddish with a yellowish tint. In Zen Buddhism (禪宗 [chan zong]), the Linji School (濟家 [ji jia]) uses yellow, while the Caodong School (洞家 [dong jia]) has various types. For Pure Land Buddhism (淨土宗 [jing tu zong]), all colors except purple and scarlet (紫緋 [zi fei]) are generally called Xiangyi, but excluding blue (藍色 [lan se]). Mutually dependent. Zuo Zhuan, Fifth Year of Duke Xi: "As the proverb says, 'The carriage cheek-guard and the carriage body are mutually dependent; when the lips are gone, the teeth will be cold.' This refers to the states of Yu (虞 [yu]) and Guo (虢 [guo])!" Wen Xuan, Bao Zhao, Rhapsody on the Ruined City: "The thickets are vast and boundless, the dense undergrowth relies on each other."

相依：彼此倚賴。《左傳．僖公五年》：「諺所謂輔車相依，脣亡齒寒者，其虞虢之謂也！」《文選．鮑照．蕪城賦》：「灌莽杳而無際，叢薄紛其相依。」
