喜見菩薩 [xi jian pu sa]—Joyful-to-See Bodhisattva — [Bodhisattva (菩薩 [pu sa])] This is an abbreviation for All Beings Joyful-to-See Bodhisattva (一切眾生 [yi qie zhong sheng]). He was the previous incarnation of Bodhisattva Medicine King (藥王菩薩 [yao wang pu sa]), who once burned his own body as an offering to the Lotus Sutra (法華經 [fa hua jing]). The Chapter on Bodhisattva Medicine King of the Lotus Sutra (法華經藥王品 [fa hua jing yao wang pin]) states: "This Bodhisattva All Beings Joyful-to-See delighted in practicing asceticism (苦行 [ku xing]). Within the Dharma of the Buddha Sun-Moon-Pure-Bright-Virtue (日月淨明德佛 [ri yue jing ming de fu]), he diligently practiced (精進經行 [jing jin jing xing]) and single-mindedly sought Buddhahood (一心求佛 [yi xin qiu fu]) for twelve thousand years, after which he attained the Samadhi (三昧 [san mei]) of Manifesting All Forms (得現一切色身三昧 [de xian yi qie se shen san mei]). Having attained this samadhi, his heart was greatly gladdened, and he immediately thought: 'My attainment of the Samadhi of Manifesting All Forms is entirely due to the power of having heard the Lotus Sutra. I shall now make offerings to the Buddha Sun-Moon-Pure-Bright-Virtue and the Lotus Sutra.' Immediately, he entered this samadhi, and in the empty sky, he rained down Mandarava flowers (曼陀羅華 [man tuo luo hua]), (excerpt omitted) as an offering to the Buddha. After making this offering, he arose from samadhi and thought to himself: 'Although I have made offerings to the Buddha with supernatural power, it is not as good as making an offering with my own body.' He then ingested various fragrances and sandalwood, (excerpt omitted) wrapped his body in divine precious garments, poured fragrant oils over himself, and with his vow and supernatural power, set his own body ablaze. His light illuminated eighty billion worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges (恒河沙世界 [heng he sha shi jie]). (excerpt omitted) At that time, the Buddha told Bodhisattva Constellation King Flower (宿王華菩薩 [su wang hua pu sa]): 'What do you think? Was All Beings Joyful-to-See Bodhisattva someone else? He is none other than the present Bodhisattva Medicine King.'"
