五位無心 [wu wei wu xin]—Five States of No-Mind — [Enumeration of Terms]

1. No-mind in the Heaven of No-Thought (無想天無心 [wu xiang tian wu xin]): This is the state where non-Buddhist practitioners (外道 [wai dao]) are born in the Heaven of No-Thought (無想天 [wu xiang tian]), which is in the Fourth Dhyāna Heaven (四禪天 [si chan tian]) of the Form Realm (色界 [se jie]). They experience the karmic retribution of no-mind for 500 great kalpas (五百大劫 [wu bai da jie]).
2. No-mind in the Attainment of No-Thought (無想定無心 [wu xiang ding wu xin]): This is the state where non-Buddhist practitioners cultivate the attainment of no-thought (無相定 [wu xiang ding]) in order to be born in the Heaven of No-Thought (無想天 [wu xiang tian]).
3. No-mind in the Attainment of Cessation (滅界定無心 [mie jie ding wu xin]): This is the state of no-mind attainment (無心定 [wu xin ding]) entered into by Arhats (阿羅漢 [a luo han]) who are liberated in both ways (俱解脫 [ju jie tuo]), as they delight in the wondrous tranquility (妙寂 [miao ji]) of Nirvāṇa (涅槃 [nie pan]). The maximum duration is seven days (七日 [qi ri]).
4. No-mind in Extreme Sleep (極睡眠無心 [ji shui mian wu xin]): This is a state where the six consciousnesses (六識 [liu shi]) temporarily cease their activity during extreme sleep.
5. No-mind in Extreme Stupor/Fainting (極悶絕無心 [ji men jue wu xin]): This is a state where one temporarily loses consciousness and breath due to being forced into it by injuries, illness, etc.

These states of no-mind are discussed in relation to a continuous body in one lifetime; therefore, the two states of no-mind during death and birth are not mentioned. Furthermore, the two consciousnesses, Manas (末那 [mo na]) and Ālaya (阿賴耶 [a lai ye]), are always continuous and never cease or become no-mind, so they are not mentioned. 五位無心—【名數】一,無想天無心,外道生於色界四禪天之無想天,五百大劫間受無心果報之位也。二,無想定無心,外道為生於無想天而修無相定之位也。三,滅界定無心,是俱解脫之阿羅漢,欣樂涅槃妙寂所入之無心定之位也。以七日為最極。四,極睡眠無心,在極睡眠而一時六識不修行之位也。五,極悶絕無心,是逼於打傷病苦等而一時氣絕失心之位也。此無心為於一期相續之身上論者,故不言死生位之二無心,且末那,阿賴耶,之二識,恒時相續而無斷絕無心之時,故不言之。但於六識論之。見百法問答鈔三。

[míng shù] yī, wú xiǎng tiān wú xīn, wài dào shēng yú sè jiè sì chán tiān zhī wú xiǎng tiān, wǔ bǎi dà jié jiān shòu wú xīn guǒ bào zhī wèi yě. èr, wú xiǎng dìng wú xīn, wài dào wèi shēng yú wú xiǎng tiān ér xiū wú xiāng dìng zhī wèi yě. sān, miè jiè dìng wú xīn, shì jù jiě tuō zhī ā luó hàn, xīn lè niè pán miào jì suǒ rù zhī wú xīn dìng zhī wèi yě. yǐ qī rì wèi zuì jí. sì, jí shuì mián wú xīn, zài jí shuì mián ér yī shí liù shí bù xiū xíng zhī wèi yě. wǔ, jí mèn jué wú xīn, shì bī yú dǎ shāng bìng kǔ děng ér yī shí qì jué shī xīn zhī wèi yě. cǐ wú xīn wèi yú yī qī xiāng xù zhī shēn shàng lùn zhě, gù bù yán sǐ shēng wèi zhī èr wú xīn, qiě mò nà, ā lài yé, zhī èr shí, héng shí xiāng xù ér wú duàn jué wú xīn zhī shí, gù bù yán zhī. dàn yú liù shí lùn zhī. jiàn bǎi fǎ wèn dá chāo sān.

[ming shu] yi, wu xiang tian wu xin, wai dao sheng yu se jie si chan tian zhi wu xiang tian, wu bai da jie jian shou wu xin guo bao zhi wei ye. er, wu xiang ding wu xin, wai dao wei sheng yu wu xiang tian er xiu wu xiang ding zhi wei ye. san, mie jie ding wu xin, shi ju jie tuo zhi a luo han, xin le nie pan miao ji suo ru zhi wu xin ding zhi wei ye. yi qi ri wei zui ji. si, ji shui mian wu xin, zai ji shui mian er yi shi liu shi bu xiu xing zhi wei ye. wu, ji men jue wu xin, shi bi yu da shang bing ku deng er yi shi qi jue shi xin zhi wei ye. ci wu xin wei yu yi qi xiang xu zhi shen shang lun zhe, gu bu yan si sheng wei zhi er wu xin, qie mo na, a lai ye, zhi er shi, heng shi xiang xu er wu duan jue wu xin zhi shi, gu bu yan zhi. dan yu liu shi lun zhi. jian bai fa wen da chao san.
