問話 [wen hua]—Wènhuà: [Miscellaneous Term] These are the questions posed by students in a Chan (Zen) monastery (禪林 [chan lin]) to the abbot or master (和尚 [he shang]). Specifically, they are the Chan (Zen) questions asked by Zen practitioners (禪客 [chan ke]) in the Dharma Hall (法堂 [fa tang]). Traditionally, students considered learning these questions to be an important skill, but this practice had many drawbacks. The Jingde Record of the Transmission of the Lamp (傳燈錄 [chuan deng lu]) (Chapter on Chan Master Ruilu Xian 瑞鹿先禪師 [rui lu xian chan shi]) states: "The master said: Generally, when studying Buddhadharma (參學佛法 [can xue fu fa]), it is not necessarily the case that learning 'questions' constitutes true study."
