萬 [wan]—万 [wan] (wàn) — [Technical term (术语 [shu yu])] The sound of the character 卐 [wan] (wàn). The character 卐 [wan] (wàn) is not found in the classics and commentaries (经传 [jing chuan]). It is only found in the Buddhist Tripitaka (释藏 [shi cang]). Buddhists (释家 [shi jia]) say that when the Buddha is reborn, a 卐 [wan] (wàn) symbol appears on his chest, and only then did later generations come to recognize this character. The Huayan Glossary of Sounds and Meanings (华严音义 [hua yan yin yi]) states that 卐 [wan] (wàn) was originally not a character. In the second year of Changshou (长寿 [zhang shou]) reign of the Zhou (周 [zhou]) dynasty, this symbol was provisionally created and inscribed on the Tian Shu (天枢 [tian shu]). Its sound was designated as 万 [wan] (wàn). It signifies the gathering place of auspicious myriad virtues (吉祥万德 [ji xiang wan de]). Mr. Mei of Xuancheng (宣城梅氏 [xuan cheng mei shi]) did not include it in his dictionary (字汇 [zi hui]). It was only when Wu Renchen (吴任臣 [wu ren chen]) of Qiantang (钱塘 [qian tang]) compiled the Yuan Yin (元音 [yuan yin]), in the last volume of the Tongyun (统韵 [tong yun]) section, that it was formally added as a supplement. Refer to the entry for the character 万 [wan] (万字 [wan zi]).
