外護 [wai hu]—External Protection — [Term] One of the two protections (二護 [er hu]). The precepts established by the Buddha, which protect one's body, speech, and mind from wrongdoing, are called Internal Protection (內護 [nei hu]). Relatives (族親 [zu qin]) and patrons/donors (檀越 [tan yue]) who provide clothing and food (衣服飲食 [yi fu yin shi]) constitute External Protection. See Sanzang Fashu (三藏法數 [san cang fa shu]) Volume 7.

外護—【術語】二護之一。佛所制之戒法,護吾身口意之非為內護。族親檀越,供衣服飲食為外護。見三藏法數七。

外戶 [wài hù] [wai hu]—
A door that is closed from the outside. Book of Rites - The Evolution of Rites: "Therefore, conspiracies are shut down and do not arise, and theft, disorder, and treachery do not occur. Therefore, the outer doors (- wài hù) are not closed. This is called the Great Harmony (大同 [da tong] - dà tóng)." Song Dynasty. Fan Chengda, "Composed on Behalf of Children for Dragon Boat Festival Door Stickers," Poem 3 of 3: "Smilingly ask the mugwort figure (艾人 [ai ren] - ài rén) to watch the outer door (- wài hù), in the depths of the north window, sing of returning."
