Vyādhyauṣadha (व्याध्यौषध) refers to “medicine for the sickness” (of elephants), according to the 15th century Mātaṅgalīlā composed by Nīlakaṇṭha in 263 Sanskrit verses, dealing with elephantology in ancient India, focusing on the science of management and treatment of elephants.—[Cf. chapter 11, “On the keeping of elephants and their daily and seasonal regimen”]: “14. But of medicine for sickness (vyādhyauṣadha), for one in a middling period of life (as in preceding verse) 20 palas (ca. one kilogram) every day shall be the measure, to be measured out with careful determination ; while 2 prasthas (= one-half āḍhaka, ½ pints) of ghee shall be the daily measure ; these measures are to be increased or diminished according to the (varying) strength (of the animal)”.
