The diphthongs have got at the time of their production the internal effort विवृत (vivṛta) specially strengthened; cf. यदत्रवर्णे, विवृततरं तदन्यस्मादवर्णात् (yadatravarṇe, vivṛtataraṃ tadanyasmādavarṇāt) M. Bh. on Śiva Sūtra 3,4 Vārt. 10.
