Viṭhṭhala (विठ्ठल).—Or विठ्ठलेश (viṭhṭhaleśa) grandson of रामचन्द्रशेष (rāmacandraśeṣa) the author of the प्रक्रियाकौमुदी (prakriyākaumudī). He was a Telagu Brahmana of Andhra who lived in the beginning of the sixteenth century and wrote a commentary named प्रसाद (prasāda) on the Prakriya-Kaumudi and two small works अव्ययार्थनिरूपण (avyayārthanirūpaṇa) and पाणिनिसूत्रवृत्ति (pāṇinisūtravṛtti).

viṭhṭhala (विठ्ठल).—m The name of a much-worshiped god at paṇḍharapūra. He is stated to be Krishn̤a himself, who is believed to have visited this city. He is much resorted to by the low and mean and despised of all descriptions. Hence a descriptive derivation has been invented for his name, viz. vi from vit Knowledge or understanding, ṭha Cypher, i. e. Privation, destitution, and la for lāti He takes. Thus vit, ṭha, la form viṭhṭhala, and acquire the sense Receiver of the ignorant and the destitute of understanding.
