Viṣṭambh (विष्टम्भ्).—5, 9 P.

1) To stop, obstruct; आहोस्वित् प्रसवो ममापचरितैर्विष्टम्भितो वीरुधाम् (āhosvit prasavo mamāpacaritairviṣṭambhito vīrudhām) Ś.5.9.

2) To fix, plant, rest on; अत्युच्छ्रिते मन्त्रिणि पार्थिवे च विष्टभ्य पादावुपतिष्ठते श्रीः (atyucchrite mantriṇi pārthive ca viṣṭabhya pādāvupatiṣṭhate śrīḥ) Mu. 4.13.

3) To strengthen, to support; विष्टब्धं विद्रुमस्तम्भै- र्वैदूर्यफलकोत्तमैः (viṣṭabdhaṃ vidrumastambhai- rvaidūryaphalakottamaiḥ) Bhāgavata 1.69.9.

4) To pervade, permeate; विष्टभ्याहमिदं कृत्स्नमेकांशेन स्थितो जगत् (viṣṭabhyāhamidaṃ kṛtsnamekāṃśena sthito jagat) Bhagavadgītā (Bombay) 1.42.

5) To ascertain, settle; पार्श्वतः करणं प्राज्ञो विष्टम्भित्वा प्रकारयेत् (pārśvataḥ karaṇaṃ prājño viṣṭambhitvā prakārayet) Mahābhārata (Bombay) 12.142.9. -Caus.

Vistambh (विस्तम्भ्).—(ṣṭa) fix, establish, raise (lit. & [figuratively]), make firm, stiff, or immovable, stop, obstruct; lean upon ([accusative]). [Causative] stop, hold back.
