Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationViprasevaka (विप्रसेवक) refers to a “servant of Brahmins”, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.4.3 (“The boyhood sports of Kārttikeya”).—Accordingly, as sage Viśvāmitra said to Śiva’s son: “Listen, O dear, I am not a Brahmin. I am a Kṣatriya, son of Gādhi, famous as Viśvāmitra and a servant of Brahmins (viprasevaka). O excellent boy, I have thus narrated my life to you. Who are you? Now mention everything about your life to me who am surprised”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
