viṅgaḷa (विंगळ).—This seems to be a mis-spelling, through mispronunciation, of iṅgaḷa, iṅgaḷā &c. which see in order. Note. This cacoëpy (of vi for i & of i for vi) is of extensive application; but as it is not peculiar to the Maraṭha people, but common with them to the vulgar of most nations, it need not be noticed further. It is noticed even in this slight manner solely because it might be thought that in the case of mere Maraṭhi words accuracy between the mode of pronouncing with i and the mode of pronouncing with vi could not, with any positiveness, be determined. Accordingly the mispronunciations and mis-spellings of viśvara for īśvara, vicchā for icchā, and, vice versa, of icāra for vicāra, ighna for vighna, and a thousand others, being plain corruptions, by the unlearned, of Sanskrit words thoroughly established and generally current in the language, are unnoticed altogether.
