Vasuka (वसुक) refers to the medicinal plant known as “Spermococe hispida Linn.” and is dealt with in the 15th-century Yogasārasaṅgraha (Yogasara-saṅgraha) by Vāsudeva: an unpublished Keralite work representing an Ayurvedic compendium of medicinal recipes. The Yogasārasaṃgraha [mentioning vasuka] deals with entire recipes in the route of administration, and thus deals with the knowledge of pharmacy (bhaiṣajya-kalpanā) which is a branch of pharmacology (dravyaguṇa).

Vasuka (वसुक) is the Sanskrit name for an unidentified medicinal plant, possibly identified with either Premna barbata Wall. or Calotropis gigantia, according to verse 5.123-124 of the 13th-century Raj Nighantu or Rājanighaṇṭu. Note: As a synonym Vasuka is related to many drugs. [...] Usually Vasuka nand Vaśira have been mentioned together in Saṃhitās. Ḍalhaṇa mentioned four plants for Vaśira i.e., (1) Apāmārga, (2) Sūryāvarta, (3) Markaṭatṛṇa, (4) Vasuka as Bagahula.

Agnidamanī is mentioned as having seven synonyms: Vasu, Śaiva, Vasa, Śivamallikā, Pāśupata, Śivamata, Sureṣṭa and Śivaśekhara.

Properties and characteristics: “Vasuka is of two types—white and red. Its properties are pungent (kaṭu), bittern (tikta), hot (uṣṇa), its metabolic end product (vipāka) is cold (śīta). It stimulates the digestive process. It cures indigestion, vitiated vāta and gulma (false abdominal lumps due to wind). Its white variety is rejuvenating (rasāyanī).
