Vastuniṣṭha (वस्तुनिष्ठ) refers to “that which rests on the real thing”, according to the Īśvarapratyabhijñāvivṛtivimarśinī 2.131-132.—Accordingly, “[...] This is what Dharmakīrti has said in Pramāṇaviniścaya 2.7b:—‘In both [inference and perception], the validity [of the means of knowledge] concerns a real thing …’. But in our doctrine, the concept necessarily rests on the real thing (vastuniṣṭha-tva), [even at the time of conceptualization: Utpaladeva] has [already] stated this elsewhere, for instance in [verse 1.3.5 beginning with] ‘bhrāntitve cāvasāyasya’. [...]”.
