Vaśyāñjana (वश्याञ्जन) refers to an “ointment used for the subjugation of elephants”, according to the 15th century Mātaṅgalīlā composed by Nīlakaṇṭha in 263 Sanskrit verses, dealing with elephantology in ancient India, focusing on the science of management and treatment of elephants.—[Cf. chapter 10, “on the catching of elephants”]: “10. He shall apply (to the cows) a subjugating ointment (vaśyāñjana) made of [various] things; with Celosia cristata, māleya (cardamoms?), collyrium, nāgapuṣpa (name of various plants), and honey.
