Varṇamātṛkā (वर्णमातृका) refers to the “mother of the letters”, according to the Kulakaulinīmata.—Accordingly, “[...] Called knowledge, (she is Kuṇḍalinī and) her form is (round like) an earring (kuṇḍala). Called action, she is the mother of the letters (varṇamātṛkā). Called will, (her) form is mantra. She is (both) the object of denotation and the denotator. Associated with (both) cause and effect, she emerges from within the pure (energy of the Moon) (vimalānta). She has three natures, she resides on three paths, she is endowed with the three causes and the three energies. She is associated with the letter E. (As) the Supreme Power, she resides within Śiva”.
