Varava (वरव) [?] (in Chinese: P'o-lo-p'o) is the name of an ancient kingdom associated with Pūrvaphalgunī (or Pūrvaphalgunīnakṣatra) and Uttaraphalgunī (or Uttaraphalgunīnakṣatra), as mentioned in chapter 18 of the Candragarbha: the 55th section of the Mahāsaṃnipāta-sūtra, a large compilation of Sūtras (texts) in Mahāyāna Buddhism partly available in Sanskrit, Tibetan and Chinese.—Chapter 18 deals with geographical astrology and, in conversation with Brahmarāja and others, Buddha explains how he entrusts the Nakṣatras [e.g., Pūrvaphalgunī and Uttaraphalgunī] with a group of kingdoms [e.g., Varava] for the sake of protection and prosperity.

Mahayana (महायान, mahāyāna) is a major branch of Buddhism focusing on the path of a Bodhisattva (spiritual aspirants/ enlightened beings). Extant literature is vast and primarely composed in the Sanskrit language. There are many sūtras of which some of the earliest are the various Prajñāpāramitā sūtras.

varava (वरव).—f (vara prep Over, above. Or uraṇēṃ To remain, to be over.) The prevalence, the state of being in exceeding abundance, or of being used or employed with exceeding frequency (of any product of the ground or of eatables generally). Ex. jēṃ jēṃ dhānya pikatēṃ tyācī kāṃhīṃ divasa va0 asatī; saja- guṛyācī va0 puravaṭyācī navhē; kōṅkaṇānta tāndaḷācī va0 dēśānta jōndhaḷyācī. 2 (uraṇēṃ To remain.) Surplus arising or effected; quantity remaining over (above the computed consumption &c. in consequence of some addition or some contrivance.) Ex. phaṇasācē bhājīnēṃ annāsa va0 yētī. 3 Satisfaction or sufficedness; satisfied state in consequence of sufficiency. 4 A stock or store. Ex. varṣācī va0 kēlī nāhīṃ mhaṇūna tāndaḷācā tōṭā ālā. kaṇagīntalī va0 The remains of the corn-bin, i. e. a great quantity; as contrad. from maḍakyāntalī va0 The remains of the pitcher, i. e. a small quantity. Ex. kōṅkaṇāntalēṃ pīka maḍakyāntalī varava dēśācēṃ pīka kaṇa- gīntalī varava.
