Vap (वप्).—1 U. (vapati, vapate, upta; pass. upyate; desid. vivapsati-te)

1) To sow, scatter (as seed), plant; यथेरिणे बीजमुप्त्वा न वप्ता लभते फलम् (yatheriṇe bījamuptvā na vaptā labhate phalam) Manusmṛti 3.142; न विद्यामिरिणे वपेत् (na vidyāmiriṇe vapet) 2.113; यादृशं वपते बीजं तादृशं लभते फलम् (yādṛśaṃ vapate bījaṃ tādṛśaṃ labhate phalam) Subhāṣ; Kumārasambhava 2. 5; Ś.6.23.

2) To throw (as arrow); cast (as dice); शरान् वपन्तं निशितान् सुपुङ्खान् (śarān vapantaṃ niśitān supuṅkhān) Mahābhārata (Bombay) 6.63.28.

3) To beget, produce.

5) To shear, shave (mostly Vedic). -Caus. (vāpayati te) To sow, plant, put into the ground.
