It was originally composed by Suśruta in his Suśrutasaṃhitā sūtrasthāna XXXVIII, a classic work on Āyurveda. The name is derived from the words vallī (‘creeper’) and pañcamūla, translating to “five roots”.
The five plants are
- Vidārī,
- Sarivā,
- Rajanī,
- Guḍucī,
- Ajaśṛṅgī.
The collection of herbs named Vallīpañcamūla is but one of the thirty-seven gaṇas (‘sections’) of such groups.
