He is the provedore or caterer, and the manager generally of the business of the household. He thus corresponds well with Major domo. The sense in Persian is Recorder or writer of passing occurrences; a News-writer or intelligencer &c.; but this sense is little known. vākanīsa was one of Shivaji's principal officers. His duty was to keep the private journals, records, and letters. He was further Superintendent of the household troops and establishment.
