Source: Wikisource: A dictionary of Sanskrit grammarVaiyākaraṇasiddhāntakaimudī (वैयाकरणसिद्धान्तकैमुदी).—An extremely popular work on the subject of Sanskrit grammar written for the use of students, which, although difficult at a few places, enables the students by its careful study to get a command over the subject. and enable him to read other higher works on grammar. The work is based on the Astadhyayi of Panini without omitting a single Sutra. The arrangement of the Sutras is, entirely different, as the author, for the sake of facility in understanding, has divided the work into different topics and explained the Sutras required for the topic by bringing them together in the topic. The main topics or Prakaranas are twelve in number, viz. (1) संज्ञापरिभाषा (saṃjñāparibhāṣā), (2) पञ्चसंधि (pañcasaṃdhi), (3) सुबन्त (subanta) or षड्लिङ्ग (ṣaḍliṅga), (4) स्त्रीप्रत्यय (strīpratyaya), (5) कारक (kāraka), (6) समास (samāsa), (7) तद्धित (taddhita), (8) तिङन्त (tiṅanta), (9) प्रक्रिया (prakriyā), (10) कृदन्त (kṛdanta), (11) वैदिकी (vaidikī) and (12) स्वर (svara) which are sometimes styled as व्याकरणद्वादशी (vyākaraṇadvādaśī). The work is generally known by the term सिद्धान्तकौमुदी (siddhāntakaumudī), or even कौमुदी (kaumudī), and it has got a large number of scholarly and ordinary commentaries as also commentaries on commentaries, all numbering above twelve, and two abridgments the Madhyakaumudi and the Laghukaumudi. The work was written by the reputed scholar Bhattoji Diksita of Varanasi in the seventeenth century. See Bhattoji Diksita.
Vyakarana (व्याकरण, vyākaraṇa) refers to Sanskrit grammar and represents one of the six additional sciences (vedanga) to be studied along with the Vedas. Vyakarana concerns itself with the rules of Sanskrit grammar and linguistic analysis in order to establish the correct context of words and sentences.
