Vaihāyasaṃ (वैहायसं).—adv. (to Sanskrit °sa, air; the adv. is very rare in Sanskrit; Pali vehāyasaṃ and vehāsaṃ common, and so [Buddhist Hybrid Sanskrit]), in or into the air (Kern regularly renders as a meteor; note especially Saddharmapuṇḍarīka 250.5, where two persons are con- cerned, and Kern is obliged to render vaihāyasaṃ as if it were dual, as meteors!): Saddharmapuṇḍarīka 239.2 (abhyudgamya °sam); 240.5 (°sam antarīkṣe sthitaṃ); 241.11 (°saṃ tiṣṭhet), 15 (mss. °se); 248.13, 14; 250.5 (°sam antarīkṣasthau); 331.5 (verse, °su, v.l. °sa, m.c.); Mahāvastu i.21.7 (°sam abhyudgacchanti); 55.2; 158.13 (°saṃ dvīpāto dvīpaṃ saṃkrāmati); ii.492.7; iii.27.11; 107.12, 13; 366.12; Divyāvadāna 223.15 (°saṃ ratho gacchati); 252.16 (°saṃ saptatālān abhyudgataḥ); com- mon. In Mahāvastu perhaps commoner is vaihāyasena, a regular instr. of Sanskrit °yasa, e.g. ii.96.3; °se, loc., also occurs, ii.404.20.

context information

Sanskrit, also spelled संस्कृतम् (saṃskṛtam), is an ancient language of India commonly seen as the grandmother of the Indo-European language family (even English!). Closely allied with Prakrit and Pali, Sanskrit is more exhaustive in both grammar and terms and has the most extensive collection of literature in the world, greatly surpassing its sister-languages Greek and Latin.
