Uttaramārga (उत्तरमार्ग) refers to the “northern path”, according to the commentary on the Ṣaṭsāhasrasaṃhitā, an expansion of the Kubjikāmatatantra: the earliest popular and most authoritative Tantra of the Kubjikā cult.—Accordingly, “[...] When the (the breath) enters (bit by bit) in consonance with the sixteen energies (of the digits of the moon of which it is composed) that is then the Northern Path [i.e., uttaramārga] and emanation takes place. When it exits in consonance with the sixteen energies, it is then the Southern Path and ‘death’ takes place. Who is it that thus enters and exits? It is the Gander of the Breath. The person who knows how to fashion the part of the Gander (haṃsa) of the inhaled or exhaled breath with sixteen limbs, as well as the movement of the Knots, which is the sign of the motion (of the breath and the energies) in each place, is a yogi who is without error”.

Uttaramārga (उत्तरमार्ग) or Udaṅmārga refers to the “northern path”, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 9), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “The ecliptic is divided into nine divisions known as Vīthis (paths). [...] Of the nine Vīthis the first three are known as the northern Vīthis; the next three as the central Vīthis and the last three as the southern Vīthis. [i.e., udaṅmārga—udaṅmadhyayāmyamārgasthāḥ] Again in the case of each three the first is known as the northern Vīthi, the second as the central Vīthi and the last as the southern Vīthi [i.e., uttara-madhya-dakṣiṇa]”.
