Uttambh (उत्तम्भ्).—5, 9, P. [उद्-स्तम्भ् (ud-stambh)] To stay, prop, support, hold up; K.281, Ve.6; स्कन्धोत्तम्भिततीर्थवारिकलशाः (skandhottambhitatīrthavārikalaśāḥ) Ve.6; Śiśupālavadha 4.25; प्राणेन हीदं सर्वमुत्तब्धम् (prāṇena hīdaṃ sarvamuttabdham) Bṛ. Up.1.3.23. -Caus.

1) To increase, heighten, rouse; प्रभवन्त्यभिमानशा- लिनां मदमुत्तम्भयितुं विभूतयः (prabhavantyabhimānaśā- lināṃ madamuttambhayituṃ vibhūtayaḥ) Kirātārjunīya 2.48.

2) To bind up.

Uttambh (उत्तम्भ्):—[=ut-tambh] (ud-√stambh [Pāṇini 8-4, 61]; the radical s appears in augmented and reduplicated forms and if [in Veda] the preposition is separated from the verb) [Parasmaipada] -(s) tabhnāti ([imperative] 2. sg. -(s) tabhāna [imperfect tense] ud-astabhnāt, [Aorist] -astāmpsīt, [Taittirīya-brāhmaṇa iii, 2, 10, 1, and] -astambhīt, [Ṛg-veda iii, 5, 10])

—to uphold, stay, prop;

—to support, [Ṛg-veda; Vājasaneyi-saṃhitā; Taittirīya-brāhmaṇa; Tāṇḍya-brāhmaṇa] etc.:—[Causal] -tambhayati, to lift up, raise, erect, [Harivaṃśa; Bhāgavata-purāṇa] etc.;

—to bring up;

—to irritate, excite, [Kirātārjunīya ii, 48; Bhāgavata-purāṇa; Uttararāma-carita];

—to raise in rank;

—to honour, make respectable.
