utāra (उतार).—m (utaraṇēṃ) Fordableness: also a ford. 2 Ferriage, fare at a ferry. 3 A medicine given to arrest the too potent operation of a medicine before administered; a medicine that counterworks another; a charm or any measure to overcome (a venomous bite or sting). 4 Articles of apparel or ornaments presented in honor from off one's person. 5 The flowing off or subsiding (of the waters of a flood &c.): abatement or alleviation (as of a disease or of pain): decrease, decline, wane (of wealth, fame, grandeur). 6 Declivousness, descent, slope. 7 The closing chime or peal of the caughaḍā. 8 Of the compounds with this word some are valuable, and such will follow in order; some are arbitrary, and would not warrant insertion; and some are of too obvious signification to require insertion. Of the latter two classes some instances are utārakharca-patra-pāna-auṣadha-gōḷī-puḍī- mātrā &c. and utāramōla-mōlī-ḍāva-vāṭa-raṅga-kāḷa -cāvaḍī-mantra-mārga-masalata or bēta. utārākhālīṃ asaṇēṃ or paḍaṇēṃ To be abating, decreasing, declining. utārākhālīṃ cālaṇēṃ or jāṇēṃ To abate one's speed.

Also removing (of a sickness) by drugs or charmed substances: also the substances employed. 4 Answer or key to an enigma; a stanza corresponding with another in structure, measure, some leading expressions &c., but opposed to it in its doctrine or sentiment: also a stanza or sentence corresponding with another in import, but differing in letter. 5 A copy or transcript: also a counterpart. 6 Ferriage. 7 (Commonly utāra) A ferry. 8 (Elliptically for pāṇautārā) Disgracing or dishonoring. 9 Cast-off clothes: also clothes taken off to bestow in honor. 10 Wages or cost of gathering (esp. mangoes) from the tree. 11 The vahī or stitched book in which copies (esp. of hunḍis) are taken.
