General definition (in Jainism)
Source: academia.edu: Tessitori Collection IUpāsakadaśāsaṃgrahagāthā (उपासकदशासंग्रहगाथा) (explanatory remarks) is the name of a work dealing with the Aṅga section of Jain Canonical literature.—The Upāsakadaśāsaṃgrahagāthā is included in the collection of manuscripts at the ‘Vincenzo Joppi’ library, collected by Luigi Pio Tessitori during his visit to Rajasthan between 1914 and 1919.—This elaboration is partly based on summarizing verses of the seventh aṅga which were already known to the commentator Abhayadeva (not always written correctly here). After having listed the names of the 10 towns, of the 10 laymen and of their wives, this text concentrates on the exposition in Gujarati of each of the 11 pratimās, recapitulated at the end through a Prakrit verse sometimes quoted at the end of the aṅga.
Jainism is an Indian religion of Dharma whose doctrine revolves around harmlessness (ahimsa) towards every living being. The two major branches (Digambara and Svetambara) of Jainism stimulate self-control (or, shramana, ‘self-reliance’) and spiritual development through a path of peace for the soul to progess to the ultimate goal.
