Upās (उपास्).—2 Ā.

1) To sit near to (with acc.), sit at the side of (as a mark of submission and respect); wait upon, serve, worship; ओमित्येतदक्षरमुद्गीथमुपासीत (omityetadakṣaramudgīthamupāsīta) Ch. Up.1.1.1 &c. मां ध्यायन्त उपासते (māṃ dhyāyanta upāsate) Bhagavadgītā (Bombay) 12.6; 9.14,15. उद्यानपालसामान्यमृतवस्तमुपासते (udyānapālasāmānyamṛtavastamupāsate) Kumārasambhava 2.36; अम्बा- मुपास्व सदयाम् (ambā- mupāsva sadayām) Aśvad.13; Śiśupālavadha 16.47; Manusmṛti 3.189.

2) To use, occupy, abide in, reside; ऐन्द्रं स्थानमुपासीना ब्रह्मभूता हि ते सदा (aindraṃ sthānamupāsīnā brahmabhūtā hi te sadā) Rām.1.35.1. Manusmṛti 5.93.

3) To pass (as time); उपास्य रात्रिशेषं तु (upāsya rātriśeṣaṃ tu) Rām.

4) To approach, go to or towards; उपासाञ्चक्रिरे द्रष्टुं देवगन्धर्वकिन्नराः (upāsāñcakrire draṣṭuṃ devagandharvakinnarāḥ) Bhaṭṭikāvya 5. 17; परलोकमुपास्महे (paralokamupāsmahe) 7.89.

5) To invest or blockade (as an enemy's town).

6) To be intent upon, be engaged in, take part in, (perform as a sacred rite); उपास्य पश्चिमां सन्ध्याम् (upāsya paścimāṃ sandhyām) K.176,179; तेप्युपासन्तु मे मखम् (tepyupāsantu me makham) Mb.; Manusmṛti 2. 222,3.14,7.223, 11.42.

7) To undergo, suffer; अलं ते पाण्डुपुत्राणां भक्त्या क्लेशमुपासितुम् (alaṃ te pāṇḍuputrāṇāṃ bhaktyā kleśamupāsitum) Mb.; Manusmṛti 11.184.

8) To remain or continue in any state or action; oft. with a pres. p.; अनन्येनैव योगेन मां ध्यायन्त उपासते (ananyenaiva yogena māṃ dhyāyanta upāsate) Bhagavadgītā (Bombay) 12.6.

9) To expect, wait for; दिष्टमुपासीनः (diṣṭamupāsīnaḥ) Mb.

1) To attach oneself to, practise; उपासते द्विजाः सत्यम् (upāsate dvijāḥ satyam) Y.3.192.

11) To resort to, employ, apply, use; लक्षणोपास्यते यस्य कृते (lakṣaṇopāsyate yasya kṛte) S. D.2; बस्तिरुपास्यमानः (bastirupāsyamānaḥ) Suśr.

12) To respect, recognize, acknowledge.

13) To practise archery.
