Source: Wisdom Library: Brihat Samhita by VarahamihiraUdaṅmārga (उदङ्मार्ग) or Uttaramārga refers to the “northern path”, according to the Bṛhatsaṃhitā (chapter 9), an encyclopedic Sanskrit work written by Varāhamihira mainly focusing on the science of ancient Indian astronomy astronomy (Jyotiṣa).—Accordingly, “The ecliptic is divided into nine divisions known as Vīthis (paths). [...] Of the nine Vīthis the first three are known as the northern Vīthis; the next three as the central Vīthis and the last three as the southern Vīthis. [i.e., udaṅmārga—udaṅmadhyayāmyamārgasthāḥ] Again in the case of each three the first is known as the northern Vīthi, the second as the central Vīthi and the last as the southern Vīthi [i.e., uttara-madhya-dakṣiṇa]”.
Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, jyotiṣa or jyotish) refers to ‘astronomy’ or “Vedic astrology” and represents the fifth of the six Vedangas (additional sciences to be studied along with the Vedas). Jyotisha concerns itself with the study and prediction of the movements of celestial bodies, in order to calculate the auspicious time for rituals and ceremonies.
