Ṭuṃbaya (टुंबय) in Prakrit possibly designates a kind of blow, as is mentioned in the Vividhatīrthakalpa by Jinaprabhasūri (13th century A.D.): an ancient text devoted to various Jaina holy places (tīrthas).—Note: The meaning of this word (i.e., ṭuṃbaya) is uncertain: according to Pāiasaddamahaṇṇavo, it designates a kind of blow; in Gujarati we find ṭumbo “reproach, insult”; in the context of Vividhatīrthakalpa, the word seems to designate an instrument: hammer?, to be compared to ṭaṃka?

Tumbaya (तुम्बय) refers to a type of fish identified with Glossogobius giuris Ham., as mentioned in the 12th-century Mānasollāsa or Abhilaṣitārthachintāmaṇi, an ancient Sanskrit text describing thirty-five kinds of marine and fresh water fishes.—Tumbaya is a scaly, medium-sized fish most likely inhabiting inland waters. Tumbaya means similar to a long gourd. According to Hora (1951), tumbuki in Telugu means puffed cheeks. Using the latter meaning Hora suggested the name Glossogobius giuris Ham., and we agree. This species belongs to the group called gobies.
