Trimala (त्रिमल) refers to the “three defilements”, according to the Gaganagañjaparipṛcchā: the eighth chapter of the Mahāsaṃnipāta (a collection of Mahāyāna Buddhist Sūtras).—Accordingly, as Gaganagañja said to Ratnapāṇi: “Son of good family, the thirty-two dharmas are included in sixty-four dharmas. What are those sixty-four? [...] (5) the absence of contemptuousness is included in non-haughtiness and actions with reference to the dharma; (6) humility is included in the body without crookedness and thought without crookedness; (7) the undefiled is included in getting rid of the three defilements (trimala-apagata) and cultivating the three gates of freedom; (8) no roughness is included in no harshness and no slander; [...]’”.
