Source: Shodhganga: Temples of Salem region Up to 1336 ADTrikhaṇḍakara (त्रिखण्डकर).—A type of sopāna, or, ‘staircase’ of a temple.—Trikhaṇḍakara-sopāna is one where the flight of steps is arranged on the three sides (trikhaṇḍa), of a common landing. Here there will be no break in the construction of the steps. Each step is carved to continue uninterrupted on all the three sides. This type of a staircase is built wherever the structure is built on a lofty platform.
Trikhaṇḍakara-sopāna also is a staircase built separately on the three open sides of a mukhamaṇḍapa. In this case, all the three staircases should lead to a common platform and they are all separately built.
