通達位 [tong da wei]—The Stage of Thorough Understanding — [Term (術語 [shu yu])] One of the Five Stages (五位 [wu wei]) established by the Faxiang School (法相宗 [fa xiang zong]). It is the stage where a Bodhisattva, having completed the practices of one Asaṃkhyeya Kalpa (阿僧祇劫 [a seng qi jie]), first attains the stage of the First Ground (初地 [chu de]) and partially comprehends the principle of the Twofold Egolessness (二無我理 [er wu wo li]). This is referred to as the Bodhisattva's Path of Seeing (見道 [jian dao]). The Cheng Weishi Lun (唯識論 [wei shi lun]), Vol. 9, states: "The Stage of Thorough Understanding refers to the Path of Seeing where Bodhisattvas reside." The Sānzàng Fǎshù (三藏法數 [san cang fa shu]), Vol. 21, states: "A Bodhisattva on the First Ground comprehends Thusness (真如 [zhen ru]), illuminates the principle with wisdom, and attains insight into the Middle Way (中道 [zhong dao]); hence, it is called the Stage of Thorough Understanding."
