tōḍaṇēṃ (तोडणें).—v c (Active of tuṭaṇēṃ To break. tuḍa S) To break, dissever, sunder; to part by violence, esp. by some violent modification of Cutting or Pulling--by hewing, hacking, slashing, cleaving, riving, chipping, chopping, lopping; or by snapping, rending, plucking &c. See and study the distinction between this verb and mōḍaṇēṃ drawn out under mōḍaṇēṃ. 2 To cut off from the breast, to wean; as mūla tōḍalēṃ: also to withdraw the breast; as thāna tōḍalēṃ. 3 To cut off or cut, i.e. to discontinue or diminish (a thing or a quantity allowed or enjoyed). 4 To retrench, reduce, cut (wages, expenses, troops, establishments). 5 To dissolve, disunite, break up (a common concern or business, a friendship or other connection, an associated or an assembled body). 6 To conclude, compose, quell (a dispute or difference, a commotion or tumult). 7 To bite fiercely; to gnaw and tear; to seize and pull with teeth or talons. 8 Used hyperbolically of the eager biting or stinging of bugs, fleas, mosquitoes &c.; of the harassing and worrying of duns, taskmasters, beggars &c. tōḍūna ghēṇēṃ To contract for; to farm. tōḍūna dēṇēṃ To let out on contract or farm.
