Tiryaksrotas (तिर्यक्स्रोतस्) or Tiryaksarga refers to the “creation of animals” and represents the second of the nine classes of cosmic creation (sarga), according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.1.15:—“[...] even as I [viz., Brahmā] stood desirous of creation, the Evil creation, viz. the set of five Illusions appeared before me. It was of the nature of darkness (tamas) endowed with knowledge. Then I created the chief creation (mukhyasarga) consisting of immobile beings with a delightful mind. At the bidding of Śiva, I continued my meditation in a detached spirit. While creating it I had thought it would be an aspirant (sādhaka) after the Ātman. But the creation Tiryaksrotas (Tiryaksarga) turned out to be full of misery. And it was not an aspirant. [...] I cannot adequately describe the divisions and sub-divisions of all these types of creation (e.g., Tiryaksrotas). [...]”.

Tiryaksrotas (तिर्यक्स्रोतस्) refers to the “animal creation”, according to the 10th century Saurapurāṇa: one of the various Upapurāṇas depicting Śaivism.—After the creation of this five-fold avidyā Brahmā again meditates as, a result of which the world of vegetation is produced. This is termed as mukhyasarga. [...]. Brahmā is not satisfied and he further meditates as a result of which there is the animal creation known as ‘tiryaksrotas’ . Birds and beasts coming under the ‘tiryaksrotas’ are so called as they move horizontally as distinguished from man who walks erect.

This animal creation (tiryaksrotas) is dominated by the quality of tamas, it is irrational forsaking the path of morality and virtue. Because of the predominance of tamas in both these creations Brahmā is not satisfied and meditates again . Thus results the creation of divinities (devasarga), dominated by the quality of Sattva and it is termed as ūrddhvasrotas.
