Tīrthānusaraṇa (तीर्थानुसरण) refers to “visiting holy places (tīrtha)” according to the Dharmaśāstra taught in the 10th century Saurapurāṇa: one of the various Upapurāṇas depicting Śaivism.—The dharmaśāstras unanimously declare tīrthānusaraṇa (visiting holy places) as a sāmānya-dharma for people. [...] In the Mahābhārata and the Purāṇas the tīrthas and tīrthānusaraṇa are highly lauded and are placed even above the sacrifice.
