鐵鎖橫江 [tiě suǒ héng jiāng] [tie suo heng jiang]—
During the Three Kingdoms period (三國時 [san guo shi]), Wang Jun (王濬 [wang jun]) attacked Wu (吳 [wu]). The state of Wu (吳 [wu]) used iron chains (鐵鎖 [tie suo]) to block the river horizontally (橫截江中 [heng jie jiang zhong]) and also made iron spikes (鐵錐 [tie zhui]) over a zhang (丈 [zhang]) long, secretly placing them in the river (暗置江中 [an zhi jiang zhong]) to obstruct ships (逆距船 [ni ju chuan]). Wang Jun (濬 [jun]) made rafts (筏 [fa]), tied straw figures (草人 [cao ren]) on them, and sent them ahead to remove the iron spikes (鐵錐 [tie zhui]). Then, he burned through the iron chains (鐵鎖 [tie suo]) and led his army straight down (率軍直下 [lu jun zhi xia]), whereupon the state of Wu (吳國 [wu guo]) surrendered. This allusion comes from "Book of Jin (晉書 [jin shu]), Volume 42 (卷四二 [juan si er]), Biographies (列傳 [lie chuan]), Wang Jun (王濬 [wang jun])". Later, it is used to metaphorically mean that even if defenses are tight (防衛嚴密 [fang wei yan mi]), they cannot save (挽救 [wan jiu]) one from the fate of destruction (覆滅的命運 [fu mie de ming yun]). In a ci poem (詞 [ci]) by Zhu Dunru (朱敦儒 [zhu dun ru]) of the Song Dynasty (宋 [song]), titled "Shuilongyin: Sailing a Thousand Li (水龍吟 [shui long yin].放船千里 [fang chuan qian li])", it says: "Iron chains (鐵鎖 [tie suo]) block the river (橫江 [heng jiang]), brocade sails (錦帆 [jin fan]) brave the waves (衝浪 [chong lang]), Sun Lang (孫郎 [sun lang]) truly suffered (良苦 [liang ku])." It is also written as "iron chains sinking into the river (鐵鎖沉江 [tie suo chen jiang])".
