Tiantai refers to a division of the “the lineage of profound view” within in Chinese Buddhism.—Liu states (p. 334n1407) that this school (shenguan) — also known as the Dharmatā (faxing) or Emptiness (kong) school — has two divisions in China, Tiantai and Huayan, and that the Madhyamaka or Sanlun (Three-Treatise) school is also reckoned as part of this division.—Cf. Yeshé Den (ye shes ldan) otherwise known as Zhiyi (531–97) who was like a great chariot from whom the lineage of the view spread in China. [...] He constructed a great monastery on Mount Tiantai called Guoqing Si (National Purity Monastery) and a great monastery on Yuchuan Mountain as well.
