ṭhēvaṇēṃ (ठेवणें).—v c (ṣṭhā S) To put, place, set, lay. 2 To put up; to set aside, to lay by (a work.) 3 To keep, save, spare, retain, reserve. 4 To fix, settle, establish (in an office or a situation.) 5 To engage or entertain: also to keep up or maintain (servants, troops). 6 To preserve; to keep or hold inviolate. Ex. hyānēṃ tyācī pratiṣṭhā ṭhēvilī. 7 To let alone; to leave or suffer to remain. Ex. pēṇḍhāṛyāṃ- nīṃ kāṃhīṃ ēka bhāṇḍēṃ gharānta ṭhēvilēṃ nāhīṃ. 8 To keep (a mistress). This verb, used with the suspensive or ūna form of the past participle of another verb, expresses either the laying up or putting by of the subject of some action; or the preservation of the state or appearance which the action has accomplished. Ex. hēṃ patra lihūna ṭhēva; hēṃ kāpaḍa ghaḍī karūna ṭhēva; tī gāya bāndhūna ṭhēva; śētēṃ pērūna ṭhēva; piṭhānta pāṇī ghālūna ṭhēva. Betwixt this verb and the verb ṭākaṇēṃ as used in this connection there are points of agreement and points of difference. The learner will be profited if he now study and apprehend them. ṭhēvaṇēṃ & ṭākaṇēṃ agree in signifying completeness of action and the leaving or letting go of the subject; but whilst ṭhēvaṇēṃ implies care and heed in order to the preservation of it, or to the maintenance of the effect produced upon it, ṭākaṇēṃ expresses an utter quitting and throwing off, a washing the hands of, a doing and dropping. Ex. tyācī pōthī tyāsa dēūna ṭāka; rupayē dēūna phaḍaśā karūna ṭāka; tēṃ jhāḍa upaṭūna ṭāka. For illustration of ṭhēvaṇēṃ see the five examples above.
