Tauḷa refers to “one who belongs to Tuḷudeśa” and is used to describe Divākara, according to the Anantaśayanakṣetramāhātmya, a text talking about the Thiruvananthapuram temple in eleven chapters, written before the 14th century and claiming to be part of the Brahmāṇḍapurāṇa.—The māhātmya mentions a three-door sanctum (having three openings at the locations of the god’s head (śiras), navel (nābhi), and feet (pāda) in the temple and though this is normally not seen in other temples, it can be seen in the Tiruvanantapuram temple. Moreover, in the māhātmya, the sage Divākara is addressed as a Tauḷa (one who belongs to Tuḷudeśa) by the Lord, who instructs the sage to perform the daily rituals and also says that he will be especially pleased by the rituals performed by Tauḷas.
