ṭāḷēṃ (टाळें).—n A padlock. 2 A face or plate (upper or under) of a padlock, of the works of a watch &c. 3 (Because it has a plate-top or cover.) A shaft or perpendicular opening (as a spiracle &c.) into an aqueduct or a drain: also its leaf or flat cover. 4 The sole of a shoe. 5 The upper jaw or part of the mouth: also with ughaḍaṇēṃ or with reference to opening the mouth, the lower jaw; and pl the jaws or chaps; as dōnhī hī ṭāḷīṃ ēkāśīṃ ēka basaṇēṃ or miṭaṇēṃ g. of s. To have lock-jaw. Ex. diggajāṃ- cīṃ ṭāḷīṃ baisati ||. ṭāḷīṃ yēṇēṃ To rear--a horse &c. ṭāḷīṃ (ātmā) lāvūna basaṇēṃ To sit practising Yog or abstract contemplation. 2 fig. To sit with dogged stillness, assuming utter unconcern or disregard.
