Chinese Buddhism (漢傳佛教, hanchuan fojiao) is the form of Buddhism that developed in China, blending Mahayana teachings with Daoist and Confucian thought. Its texts are mainly in Classical Chinese, based on translations from Sanskrit. Major schools include Chan (Zen), Pure Land, Tiantai, and Huayan. Chinese Buddhism has greatly influenced East Asian religion and culture.

太虛 [tài xū] [tai xu]—
1. Sky. In "Selections of Literature" [文選 [wen xuan]], Sun Chuò's [孫綽 [sun chuo]] "Rhapsody on Roaming Mount Tiāntái" [遊天台山賦 [you tian tai shan fu]]: "The Grand Void [] is vast [遼廓 [liao kuo]] and unhindered [無閡 [wu ai]], operating the wondrous existence [妙有 [miao you]] of nature [自然 [zi ran]]." Also written as "Tàiqīng" [太清 [tai qing]] or "Tàiqīng" [泰清 [tai qing]].
2. A state [境界 [jing jie]] of emptiness [空虛 [kong xu]] and loneliness [寂寞 [ji mo]].
3. The Dharma name [法號 [fa hao]] of a modern monk [僧人 [seng ren]] (1889-1947 CE). His secular surname [俗姓 [su xing]] was Lǚ [呂 [lu]], his Dharma name [法名 [fa ming]] was Wéixīn [唯心 [wei xin]], and he was commonly known by his courtesy name [字 [zi]]. A native of Chóngdé [崇德 [chong de]], Zhejiang [浙江 [zhe jiang]], he became a monk [出家 [chu jia]] at the age of sixteen. He received full ordination [具足戒 [ju zu jie]] from Master Jìchán [寄禪和尚 [ji chan he shang]] at Tiāntóng Temple [天童寺 [tian tong si]] in Níngbō [寧波 [ning bo]]. Later, he studied the Surangama Sutra [楞嚴經 [leng yan jing]] under Yáng Wénhuì [楊文會 [yang wen hui]] and English [英文 [ying wen]] with Sū Mànshū [蘇曼殊 [su man shu]]. In the first year of the Republic of China (1912 CE) [民國元年 [min guo yuan nian]], he founded the Chinese Buddhist Association for Progress [中國佛教協進會 [zhong guo fu jiao xie jin hui]] in Nánjīng [南京 [nan jing]] to promote the Buddhist Reform Movement [佛教改革運動 [fu jiao gai ge yun dong]]. Given that Buddhism [佛教 [fu jiao]] was in decline [不振 [bu zhen]] and the quality of monastics [僧眾素質 [seng zhong su zhi]] was low [低落 [di luo]] at the time, he successively founded the Wǔchāng Buddhist Academy [武昌佛學院 [wu chang fu xue yuan]], Mǐnnán Buddhist Academy [閩南佛學院 [min nan fu xue yuan]], Hàn-Zàng Buddhist Institute [漢藏教理院 [han cang jiao li yuan]], etc., cultivating monastic talents [僧材 [seng cai]]. He contributed greatly to modern Chinese monastic education [中國近代僧教育 [zhong guo jin dai seng jiao yu]] and was a leader [領袖 [ling xiu]] of the Chinese Buddhist Reformist faction [中國佛教改革派 [zhong guo fu jiao gai ge pai]]. He authored and compiled works such as "On the Sangha System" [僧伽制度論 [seng jia zhi du lun]], "Explaining the New Monk" [釋新僧 [shi xin seng]], and "On True Reality" [真現實論 [zhen xian shi lun]]. His "Complete Works of Master Tàixū" [大師全書 [da shi quan shu]] are in circulation.
太虛:1.天空。《文選.孫綽.遊天台山賦》:「太虛遼廓而無閡,運自然之妙有。」也作「太清」、「泰清」。

3.近代一位僧人的法號(西元1889~1947)。俗姓呂,法名唯心,以字行世。浙江崇德人,十六歲出家,依寧波天童寺寄禪和尚受具足戒;後從楊文會學楞嚴經;跟蘇曼殊學英文,民國元年在南京創立中國佛教協進會以推動佛教改革運動。鑑於當時佛教不振,僧眾素質低落,先後創辦武昌佛學院、閩南佛學院、漢藏教理院等,培育僧材,對中國近代僧教育貢獻很大,為中國佛教改革派的領袖。著有整理《僧伽制度論》、《釋新僧》、《真現實論》等。有《太虛大師全書》行世。
