Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationSvayaṃbhava (स्वयंभव) refers to “self-born”, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.3.51 (“The resuscitation of Kāma”).—Accordingly, as Śiva said to Kāma: “O Kāma, I am delighted by your eulogy in the company of your wife. O self-born (svayaṃbhava), tell me the boon you desire. I shall grant it”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
