Source: archive.org: Shiva Purana - English TranslationSvadhairya (स्वधैर्य) refers to “one’s own mental steadiness”, according to the Śivapurāṇa 2.5.18 (“The conversation between Nārada and Jalandhara”).—Accordingly, as Nārada said to Jalandhara: “[...] This occurs to my mind, O valiant Jalandhara that there is none more prosperous in the three worlds than Śiva who possesses the most excellent of all ladies. Even the four-faced lord Brahmā, immersed in her ocean of beauty, lost his mental steadiness (svadhairya) formerly. Who can be compared to such a beautiful lady? [...]”.
The Purana (पुराण, purāṇas) refers to Sanskrit literature preserving ancient India’s vast cultural history, including historical legends, religious ceremonies, various arts and sciences. The eighteen mahapuranas total over 400,000 shlokas (metrical couplets) and date to at least several centuries BCE.
