Sūtrakarman (सूत्रकर्मन्) refers to the “division (of the sites for buildings) with cords”, according to the Devyāmata (in the section śalyoddhāra-paṭala or “excavation of extraneous substances”).—Accordingly, “[...] When the division of [the sites for] a house and a shrine with cords (sūtrakarman) has been commenced, the wise man [i.e. the officiant] should notice an omen and observe it correctly. [The omens are] seeing [someone or something], announcing [a creature’s name], cries [of animals], and the actions of a donor. [The officiant] should carefully notice an extraneous substance as situated beneath the site. [...]”.
