蘇格拉底 [sū gé lā dǐ] [su ge la di]—
Socrates (470-399 BC). An Athenian. A great Greek philosopher who, seeing the extravagance and indolence of the people, took it upon himself to reform customs and habits. He advocated the unity of knowledge and action and is considered the founder of Western philosophy. He had many followers and is known as the "Western Confucius" (西方孔子 [xi fang kong zi]). To uphold the value of objective truth, he debated fiercely with the Sophists (詭辯派 [gui bian pai]). He was accused of corrupting the youth with heresy and not worshiping the state gods. He was later sentenced to death by drinking poison.
