In Hinduism
Natyashastra (theatrics and dramaturgy)
1) Striking (in a fight) is associated with Muṣṭi-hasta: one of the twenty-two Single-hand Gestures (in Indian Dramas) (known as asaṃyuktahastas), according to the Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa, an ancient Sanskrit text which (being encyclopedic in nature) deals with a variety of cultural topics such as arts, architecture, music, grammar and astronomy.—The word muṣṭi denotes the clenched hand. According to the Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa, in muṣṭi posture, the fingers are bent towards the palm and the thumb is set on them. The muṣṭi-hasta is used in some activities like striking, hard press of the breast, holding sword, strick and spear etc
2) The Striking action (with bow and thunderbolt) is associated with Maṇḍala: one of the “six kinds of Standing Postures for Men”.—Standing postures are determined separately for male and female. In the Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa six kinds of standing postures are discussed for men. In the maṇḍala posture the distance between two legs should be three tālas and it should be adopted to show the striking action with bow and thunderbolt. According to the Viṣṇudharmottarapurāṇa, the maṇḍala posture becomes āliḍha when the distance between two legs is five tālas.

Natyashastra (नाट्यशास्त्र, nāṭyaśāstra) refers to both the ancient Indian tradition (shastra) of performing arts, (natya—theatrics, drama, dance, music), as well as the name of a Sanskrit work dealing with these subjects. It also teaches the rules for composing Dramatic plays (nataka), construction and performance of Theater, and Poetic works (kavya).
