Sphurati (स्फुरति).—once sphurayati (= spharati 1 and 2; compare also sphuṭa), (1) suffuses, pervades, fills, especially with light, or with an emotion such as love: sphurati Saddharmapuṇḍarīka 264.1 (see spharati); ābhayā °ti 423.9; avabhāsena sphurayitvā Lalitavistara 113.2 (prose); [Boehtlingk and Roth] cite sphurayiṣyati from Lalitavistara Calcutta (see LV.), but Lefm. 145.3 reads sphuriṣyati (sarvanagaraṃ daurgan- dhena); sphuri (aor.) jinavarakṣatrāṃ (Lefm. em. °trā; [Page614-a+ 71] see kṣatra) Lalitavistara 357.4; sphuranti Mahāvastu iii.334.9; 341.14, for spharanti of parallels, see spharati; triṃśadyojanāṃ sphuritvā Mahāvastu ii.410.6 (said of Māra's army; v.l. sphar°); śā maitreṇāṃśena (so with mss.) sphuritvā Divyāvadāna 60.24, and so read in 61.12, see s.v. 1 aṃśa; the full expression is, sarvam imaṃ lokaṃ maitreṇāṃśena sphuritvā 66.18 (here Buddha is subject); sarvāṃ ca śrāvastīṃ sphuritvā Avadāna-śataka i.24.4 (of incense); maitryā sphuran i.171.9; (2) spreads (trans.) far and wide, with acc. of the thing spread and loc. of the thing spread over or filled: dharmāmegha sphuritva sarvatribhave Lalitavistara 294.4 (verse), having spread abroad the cloud of the Law in all the triple world; mahākaruṇāmeghaṃ (mss. °gha; one °ghā) sphuritvā Lalitavistara 352.11 (prose).
