Vyakarana (Sanskrit grammar)
Source: Wikisource: A dictionary of Sanskrit grammarSphoṭavāda (स्फोटवाद).—A general name given to treatises discussing the nature of Sphota written by the Vaiyakaranas who defend and establish the theory of Sphota and by the Naiyayikas who criticise the theory. Famous among these works are (1) स्फोटवाद (sphoṭavāda) by a stalwart Grammarian Kondabhatta, the author of the Vaiyakaramabhusana and (2) स्फोटवाद (sphoṭavāda) by NageSa, the reputed grammarian of the eighteenth century.
Vyakarana (व्याकरण, vyākaraṇa) refers to Sanskrit grammar and represents one of the six additional sciences (vedanga) to be studied along with the Vedas. Vyakarana concerns itself with the rules of Sanskrit grammar and linguistic analysis in order to establish the correct context of words and sentences.
