South Indian society bears striking similarity with Roman Greek society, as envisioned by the South-Indian Tamil poets of the Sangam age.—The picture of society seen in these Tamil poems bears equally well a comparison with what is known to us of the West of those times. Music and dancing occupy a really large place in South Indian poesy and in fact the South Indian of these early days was far superior to his Western counterpart. The very number of ragas and dances described with all the punctiliousness of a connoisseur by the poets of the Sangam times is astounding to the modern reader.
