sōṃvaḷa (सोंवळ).—a C (sōmaḷa) Readily susceptible of injury; tender, delicate, fragile or frail.

sōṃvaḷā (सोंवळा) [or सोवळा, sōvaḷā].—a (sumaṅgala S) Among Brahmans. Pure, holy, clean, that is in the state contradis- tinguished from ōṃvaḷā or common; that has, by ablution or other purificatory ceremony, attained qualification for the highest and most sacred rites of religion, and whom the touch of persons or things in the ōṃvaḷā or common state would disqualify. The word is used also of cloths, culinary vessels, food, and things in general which, by washing or other act or rite of purification, are rendered fit, and of certain things (such as silken and woollen cloths) which are inherently and unvaryingly fit, for the touch or use of the Sowala person. 2 (Among some subordinate classes, who, although unauthorized by the Shastra, make distinctions and fuss.) He who, by bathing &c., is pure and fit for everything. See further under ōṃvaḷā. 3 fig. Uncontaminated or undefiled (as by any crime or bad action). Ex. varakaḍa sāṛyānīṃ lāñca khāllā mī mātra sōṃ0 āhēṃ. 4 fig. Pure, free &c.; i. e. unfrequented, uninhabited, undefiled by the tread of man &c.;--as a road, a village: also exempt from worldly business, family engagements &c.; clear or free from whatever is viewed as a cause or source of pollution;--a person. 5 At weddings. Of different founders or heads of tribe, not sapravara;--used of the two families.
